Specialized Med Psychiatric Program

The Medical Psychiatric program is better suited for individuals experiencing mental health disorders medical conditions and co-occurring medical conditions

For example, some medical concerns may preclude admission to a free-standing psychiatric hospital, while certain behavioral healthcare issues can prevent an individual from being admitted to many acute care hospitals.

Our Goal is to provide the community with specialized complex medical care for the treatment of certain comorbidities on our specialized Medical-Psychiatric unit. Comorbidity is the simultaneous presence of two chronic diseases or conditions in a patient. Therefore, patients who have both acute, active medical and psychiatric problems are candidates. Treating patients with low level medical diagnoses simultaneous to psychiatric diagnoses will be growing specialty.

Admission Criteria

Patients who have both acute, active medical and psychiatric problems are candidates if they also meet the following criteria:

  • Age 18+
  • Medical Diagnosis
  • Mental Health Diagnosis
  • Inability to demonstrate age-appropriate responsibility in management of their chronic illness, behaviors (including eating) that are not self-destructive, medication, compliance, and/or mood stability

Our individualized integrated treatment program

Care in the Medical Psychiatry Unit is provided by an interdisciplinary team of professionals whose experience and expertise allows them to identify, assess, and develop comprehensive plans to address individuals whose needs include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Cardiovascular disease and anxiety or depression
  • Dementia with behavioral problems
  • Nutritional disorders and altered mental status
  • Infection or electrolyte imbalances and delirium

When a patient enters the Medical Psychiatry Unit, he or she completes a comprehensive multidimensional evaluation that will guide the development of a comprehensive personal treatment plan. In addition to addressing the type and level of services that the individual will receive while in the Medical Psychiatry Unit, this plan will also include rehabilitation, health promotion, social service interventions, and the commitment of key personnel and support staff to optimize the patient’s health, increase his or her functional capacity, and enhance his or her ability to live with the greatest degree of independence.
